Jolly Bar Bakewell with Fat Quarter Shop

Do you sew with pre-cuts? Charm squares, layer cakes, and jelly rolls are a great way to get started with quilting, since most of the cutting is already done for you. They’re also a great way to use all of the fabrics from one collection without the expense of fat quarter bundles or yardage.

Fabric pull: Chantilly by Fig Tree & Co; Kona Sand yardage; and a blender.
Look at those pinked edges!

Top Tip: When cutting and sewing with pre-cuts, I like to line everything up with the very edge of the pinked tips so that I can use the full size of the pre-cut piece.

What can I sew with a Jolly Bar?

Technically, you can sew anything as long as your largest cut is only 5″x10″! Each Jolly Bar comes with an exclusive coordinating pattern from Fat Quarter Shop, and there are also YouTube videos, patterns, and books available if you want to explore more. The possibilities are truly endless!

The Jolly Jabber, the Fat Quarter Shop blog, has lots of free patterns for using pre-cuts and more.

A Jolly Bar was the starting point for this Jolly Bar Bakewell quilt. Each piece was then further cut into smaller squares and rectangles, with the Kona Sand yardage in between.

How cute are these blocks?

Saskatchewan winters are long, and cold. The temperature dropped to around -30/-40C with the windchill in January, but this quilt was giving me some serious Spring vibes! Just look at those little strawberries and tulips!

The end result is a super cute AND super quick baby quilt that looks like it took waaaay more time to complete than it actually did. Plus, you get the impact of using all the fabrics from a collection, without excess yardage left over.

For anyone curious about how I took this photo: I put loops of packing tape along the top edge of the border, stuck it to my neighbour’s fence, and snapped as many photos as I could!

I think this is my favourite photo, especially since my husband was appalled that I would put the quilt top in the snow just for a picture! 😉

And there you have it! A soft, sweet baby quilt that came together quick. The pattern is here if you want to make your own, and be sure to check out the Jolly Bar pre-cuts available exclusively at the Fat Quarter Shop.
