I started this blog almost one year ago (has it been a year already? I can’t remember!) and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’ve shared a lot of my discoveries and insights, especially over on Instagram, but there’s one lesson that hit me like a ton of bricks the other day…
Be yourself.
It’s something that gets touted on all the IG advice guides, all the wellness memes, it’s everywhere. “Be yourself”. And while it can be incredibly difficult to truly understand what it means, it’s an incredibly important lesson that I think everyone needs to be reminded of once in a while.
I took this photo of my workspace yesterday, and had a little chuckle. Here I am, making star blocks out of celestial print fabric, while watching Star Wars. “What a nerd.”
This is the kind of stuff I was relentlessly teased about growing up. This was the kind of stuff I tried to hide from the world, because it usually became fodder for comments about how weird I am.
And now? This is the kind of content that inspires other people. It connects me to more people. By being myself, and sharing what I love, I’ve found a community of like-minded people. And I’ve found the confidence to walk away from the people who don’t understand, and respond with judgement.
Being yourself is the easiest, hardest thing you can do. It takes a lot of work to discover WHO you are, and even more work to embrace it and embody it. And it takes ongoing work to remain yourself in the face of others who prefer you a different way. But the more you embrace yourself… I promise you, the happier you’ll be.
